Thanks to funding from the Queensland Government (Engage Science), we are pleased to announce that submissions are now OPEN for the Science Write Now Young Writers' Fellowships! We are looking for pitches for short stories from Queensland high school students in Years 10, 11 or 12 on the theme of "Quantum".

Four Fellows will be selected; at least two of these will be from regional or remote areas. Selected Fellows will be mentored by SWN Editor-in-Chief Dr Amanda Niehaus in the writing of their pieces; will be awarded $400; and will have their work published in a special edition of the magazine.

Science Write Now publishes creative writing inspired by science. Your proposed piece doesn't have to be sci-fi -- in fact, have a look at the magazine to see what kinds of diverse writing we produce! Short stories written by our last two Young Writing Fellows are linked here at the bottom of the page -- and they're brilliant, but don't worry if your idea isn't quite there yet. These stories are the product of months of conversations, writing, edits and revision.

If this opportunity sounds exciting to you, then please submit your pitch or ideas here on our Submittable page before April 30th, 2025. Mentorships will take place in May, June and July, with completed pieces to be published coinciding with National Science Week in August

We look forward to hearing from you! Selections will be made in the first week of May
